Pavagadh Hill and Temple in JaipurPavagadh Hill is a historical and religious place in Champaner district, 47 km from Vadodara city. This hill starts from Champaner and the temple lies at an altitude of 1471 feet. Champaner is the birth place of famous musician ‘Biju Bawra’. Champaner - Pavagad is promoted and is granted as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2004.
Pavagadh Hill History
Champaner was established by Maharaja Vanraj Chavda in the memory of his minister Champa. There are stories about Maa Kali participation in garba ras in human form during Navratri. Jaisen was was cursed by Maa Kali, which resulted in loss of kingdom.
Amongst 51 shakti peeth in India this one is in Champaner district. This place has been visited by Hindu devotees from hundreds of years. There is a large open area called chowk in front inside the temple there is a goddess’s statue and many images of goddesses Kali and goddesses Bahuchara are placed in the temple. There are many white rats in the temple which is a sign of good luck for many people. There is a story about the pavagad hill that it is considered as the symbolic toe of goddesses Sati. Goddesses Maa Kali is the incarnation of the goddesses Parvati, Durga, and Sati. The temple of Maa Kali the goddesses is visited by millions pilgrims and tourists in a year.
The Muslim emperor of Gujarat shifted his capital from Ahmebad to Champaner, where he did lot of development work. The Champaner fort, Uohra mosque, mandavi, etc were constructed by him. Pavagad is also a famous pilgrim centre of Muslims. There is a Sadanshah Pir Dargah near temple constructed by the Muslim Emperor.
Development of the area
Champaner has lots of industries and upcoming industries in Halol and Kalol area. The way towards panchmahal is Pavagadh. It is a tribal area of Bhils. Sage Vishwamitra has also contributed this place with his power and Vishwamitri River. There is a dense forest covering the hill.
How to reach the temple
To reach this place from Vadodara tourist can opt for bus, or hire taxi.
Machi has been added as a destination of busses.
There is a facility of ropeway to reach temple quickly from Machi. It takes 6-8mins to reach temple by ropeway whereas, it takes an hour to climb the hill to reach temple. There are about 250 steps to be climbed after reaching a point via ropeway.
Best time to visit
This is a very beautiful place to visit where you can enjoy the view of waterfall from the hill during monsoon time.
This temple opens early in the morning and remains open for its worshipers till late hours in the evening.
There are many shops after you reach a point via ropeway. The shops, sell water, fruit plates, pooja items, bangle shops, cold drink, boiled corn, etc.
Food Joints and Accommodation
There is a food joint at Machi. The Machi Haveli is now used as a rest house for pilgrims.
